Both have put out full length albums that are pretty ridiculous. (as in good)

Of course with any youth endeavor there are bound to be some hiccups, but a lot of these people come with straight fire. Here are two tracks from a mixtape recently released featuring BUMP, YMR and other organizations with similar goals (R.E.A.L. H.A.R.D. and Youth Speaks), true2life

What Im feeling about the projects is that the artists get to create the sound that they know. The people involved in organizing know enough about the "bay sound" to help them get there. Plus, they arent rapping about staying in school or some cheesy shit. While the messages are generally positive, they are spitting what they see, what they want to see, and what needs to get done to get there.

Mi Barrio is reggaeton but with the dude Panama just KILLING it. Seriously one of the hypest performers...He, Rico and Big Dan who are also on the track just have an infectious swagger on stage and can get any audience amped. I pretty much hate reggaeton, but when they perform this track, it really knocks.

The Bay is an homage to this spot. You know what it is.

I just wanted to throw these tracks up before I get my hands on the full length YMR album which has one of the most ridiculous songs ever.
Stay Tuned for that shit cause the track im thinking of is pretty bananas.

By the way, endless respect to the people who work with the youth, amazing things gwaaaaan. I feel really fortunate to have been introduced to a lot of the artists and I know many of em will make a dent somehow. To have been asked to do cuts on the BUMP album was a huge honor and I hope to be working with them even more.

(By the way, excuse my writing. It is nice to read sites that talk about this stuff. From 6th-through around 10th grade (approx 96-99), most of what i listened to was jungle/drum and bass or somehow related to it (occasional lapses into hardcore shall not be mentioned further). Because I was fricken young, it is not as if i could go out and check out the raves or chill at the record store talking about all this (nearest spot was half an hour away). So while my most of my counterparts were just discovering their tastes, I was pretty much entrenched in my little jungle world.

At the time, nobody could touch the whole N2O/Turnstyle crew. (now basically repped by Digital Bombing) To me, those guys were the Kings. RAW (B-Boy 3000) especially, with N8 Shimizu running the whole show. They were dropping mixes left and right (Jungle Warriors, yes...they still ride shotgun in the ride) and talking shit, which i thought was cool as hell. Plus, N8 was a BMXer at some point and also brought some style to Giant Robot Magazine for a minute.

So for me, the ultimate thing would be to hit up the dojo itself, n2o headquarters in downtown LA. Freeburning Drum and Bass was the spot and I was so ready for it after dealing with the annoying as hell trance and fat white dudes/strung out dirty hoes of the other record spots that carried jungle. So for my 8th grade graduation (yes) my parents drove me down to the spot.

Now Im cool with the idea of the 'cool hidden retail spot' ala the rivington club, NDG, and SNAFU...but this shit WAS SERIOUS. For a little 8th grade dude, i was over my head for real. you had to ring the buzzer and actually talk a grumpy ass sounding dude and they had to know who you were. (luckily i had been in contact with n8) But damn, talk about alienating your customers and shit. My parents were next level suspicious. So they open the big gate on the side of the building and i walk all the way back and see the famed halfpipe. The place was pretty sick otherwise. All kinds of white labels/test pressings and a little studio in the back. Anyway, I bought my shit and bounced, heading for fat beats.

I guess my parents are pretty damn chill. (Did i mention that my stepdad smokes the green more than anyone i know?)

Yeah, i was all about this stuff at a younger age. So here are three tracks that I would play mess with a lot, each with differing levels of illness.

Respect to west coast jungle already.

B-Boy 3000 (LA)-Mathematical Chemistry (Remix)

Curious? Storm noises, then that dusted ass echochamber.

Most recently used by DJ Scratch for B. Siegel's "Purple Rain" (where the hook was borrowed too), the track has been used by not a small amount of producers. Rza lifted the guitar picks for GZA, etc.

My first introduction to the song, however, (and how many times has this been true?) was through sticky icky jungle. In the seventh grade I wondered where the hell the loop from the beginning of Easy Vol. 6 was from. Back then I concluded that it must be some obscure dub track. Who else has that kind of perfect echo? Yeah, obviously I learned that it belonged to the dramatics, but it always just stuck to me, whenever i heard it, as more of a dub track than anything else. For that reason, my favorite usage of it has been that Easy Vol. 6 track, which i already posted on some mp3 blog somewhere. But what the hell, it is summer. Here are the two tracks, The Dramatics, "In The Rain" and Droppin Science, "Easy Vol. 6."
For all you smokers, sippers; enjoy. dubbed out bliss.

The Dramatics-In The Rain
Droppin Science-Easy Vol. 6 (fixed)

get better

In hoping for her speedy recovery (breast cancer), here is a Kylie Minogue track with Towa Tei.
Typical Towa Tei sounding, but that is why I like it. It has been goin on for a minute over at Soul Strut and is always a popular topic at B-Side. (I tend to start the discussion with beejae whenever someone knowledgable walks in to get their take on it). Anyway, I personally just dont see it happening.

Lambo attributes it to the flow (or lack their of) of bay heads. The Keak type dudes...how the hell you gonna just ride to that? People around the country like to be able to sing along to stuff...not gonna happen with a lot of bay. They may come with dope lines, but they arent easily chanted along with, like say, a mike jones line. So in that sense, it just aint marketable.

Next, i feel like (from an outside pov) most of what i heard fom the bay, (growing up in a whiteupperclass suburb) beyond like too short and e-40 (and really, everyone who talks about tupac really being bay...ask most of the general public where he was from) was the other side of the bay hip-hop, the solesides/quannum, hiero type stuff, which appealed to a wealthier, more privileged and media savvy youth consumer. That stuff got the edge over the grimey bay stuff in terms of the wider hip-hop consciousness.

I think that is one of the things that sets it apart from houston, which a lot of people like to compare it to. i cant really think of the alternative scene that got shine in houston for resources to be diverted to. them dudes were getting vinyl pressed and DJs were playing their shit, right? Most of the DJs up here seemed to be more down with the other sound, and then turntablism started to rule these parts, which was linked to a whole 'trueschoolization' of the scene.

Then all the hard bay dudes just stopped putting out vinyl and sold their albums from the trunk. Without the DJ involved, and this really insulated economy going on, a lot of bay shit was content to just stay in its own zone and not necessarily evolve. I dont think the songs got polished as much with good hooks and whatever, which is necessary to blow. Add to that the fact that nobody really seems to have that starpower and i just dont see it happening. Even with the e-40/lil jon album.

Then again, who really cares if it blows or not, seems like a lot of people are content with it as it is, without it getting diluted and all that.

So the major disclaimer is: Ive been in the bay for what, like 2 years now? Im 19. I really dont know shit about "the streets" and my closest connection is when dudes from Thizz entertainment or other labels roll through to drop records off. Im just sayin.

oh, yeah, the crime mob track...obviously not bay, but i was working on a mix last night with stilettoes and instead played the flip (which is this on the promo) and was like oh shit, why havent i listened to it before. Then i mixed it with that one diplo track, way more, and it was crackin. you need to blast the balls off this one. Oh yeah, the bay needs more female MCs also. Kamilyn where you at???

Mom

Michael Wycoff-Looking Up To You
Mass Production-Firecracker
Paul Hardcastle-Rainforest
Isaac Hayes-Walk On By
Malo-Suavecito

In honor of the most useful Hallmark Holiday, here are some tracks that my mom brought into my life, directly (by playing them nonstop) or indirectly (her radio selection choice). Obviously "walk on by" is like the shit that everybody knows. How did i first come across it? Her listening to a best of Burt Bacharach cd (peep it in iTunes). "Rainforest" another classic, juggled to infamy by Mista Sinista, and was discovered on a smooth adult contemporary station. I first heard "Looking Up To You" on a mix show on the ghetto oldies station she usually listens to, and "Suavecito" is just one of her favorite songs of all time.

happy mother's day, which is actually every day for some of us.

I Love My Mom.

(by the way: my mom and i have unspoken contests with who can say the F word the most. That music quiz on my iPod knows this and kicks my ass with it. Both of them have that kind of woozy/screwed 'lo fi' Boards of Canada sound without too much depression (I mean, look at the names of the albums). They both use tired breaks and sludgy heroin bass. (Except on the poppy Unrest sounding cuts on the Land Of the Loops album (this track an example).

The problem with the albums is that they never go anywhere. Everything sounds almost exactly the same and the sound isnt distinct enough to set it apart and make it all the way listenable. The vocal samples are never esoteric enough to elicit more than a snicker. All im saying is that these guys arent exactly on point but have moments of pleasant listenability. Bedroom sounds.

certified bananas is an understatement

Make sure you get your ass to Certified Bananas and download the 'April Mix'. (note: one of the band members is an audio engineer or something, so of course it sounds mr. clean) Chopped up 'indie' whatever acoustic guitars are a weak spot of mine.

Cant listen to grunk allll the time, right?

(cough)turntablism(cough)

UPDATE: YO, Go check out the Dipset/A-Trak cut at Soul Sides!

Peanut Butter Wolf-Tale Of 5 Cities
A-Trak-All Hail To My Hands
Kid Koala-Emperor's Main Course in Cantonese

I am surrounded by the dorkiest of scratch nerds. I have mad respect for Tester and Trilogy Sound (and actually, a lot of the Atlanta scene...i mean, not that i was ever down with it, but LA and SF are pretty wack, to be honest).

So it is just some F.I.L.A. and Game Over with a ragga jungle refix. This is some fighting music at some point though, cause that bassline is sinister. It's not the best sounding ting (gotta keep that in the dubplate vaults, nawmean?) I dunno, I always thought it was getting it's ass kicked. (to be honest, i never f'ed with anything post-SNES. I also never touched anything made by Sega and for some reason associated them with white people, cause that is what everyone had when i moved from Hawai'i)

Back then, however, I purchased ANYTHING that had the Suburban Base logo. They could do no wrong to me, (I was an impressionable 5th/6th grader), and so I picked this up. Most of the songs, as you can see by the tracklisting is either softy drum and bass or trance or house...not my scenes at all.

Regardless!

Remarc was on this shit, and he was that dude! Mr. Time was also on there...I mean, dude had a cheesy name (aka. Justin Time...uhhhh), but he was part of Krome and Time who did some of the best hardcore stuff (to me, anyway). I obviously wasnt listening to UK pirate radio but i sure as hell was trying to act like i was. (again, 6th grade).

I posted these tracks cause on the Damage Control show w/ Dizzee, he was talking about the influences of D&B etc and it got me all happy cause that is the stuff that ran my younger days. Full circle type stuff (like that ska->bass insanity R.A.W. track...WHUT!...again, respect to N8 for actually listening to a 14 year-old's mixtape and giving constructive criticism. illtastic)

Anyway, watch ya bassbins on these tracks.
Wobbly bass like nuts. Marvel at how random a Sub Base/Sega collabo is.
(and really, how much can you expect from a videogame soundtrack remix album?)

Remarc-Virtua Cop
Mr. Time-Golden Axe

Oh yeah, and you know how Lemon-Red is having a T-Shirt Contest?

I was mad bored and decided to try my hand, then realized that i didnt know what i was doing. It is just one of those works of unbridled brilliance that makes you go "what?" Although it is really well known, it definitely isnt as ubiquitously mentioned as all the Scientist albums that most kind-of-into-dub people like to talk about. What gets me (and most people who listen to it) are the basslines. They are heavy, but always articulate: they dont sacrifice melodic intricacy/variation for impact. I am as much a fan of atonal bass blasts as the next person, but the way these lines develop and play off of all of the other instruments and percussion is just ridonkulous. Aside from the bass, the arrangements of Mudie are practically impeccable and no note is wasted. Like when the horns first come in in "Dub Conference"...lord have mercy...and then King Tubby is there to rub it all in and rinse it out.

Sorry for the sound quality, my copy is right played out! UNLV (Uptown Niggas Livin' Violent) were the first group ever signed to Cash Money Records. Without these folks there's no Weezy, no Juve, no Hot Boys, no Back Dat Azz Up, No Bling Bling...You get the idea...These dudes are pioneers in the Ignant, gangsta southern empire of rap. You can even hear them shout out "Mannie" and "Baby" at the end of "Got A Lot Of Love (check the old school Mannie Fresh g-funk Production)." They also beefed with Mystikal and recorded a diss track toward him that became their biggest hit (the beat was later used again for a Juve single). UNLV are still doin their thing but only two members remain (R.I.P. Yellow Boy) and they are no longer with Cash Money who they feel did them wrong moneywise. So here's some knowledge. Respect to government names who i just noticed dropped a lil Unlv back in august 2004. The unremixed "Naked Eye" was one of my grade school anthems. Why? Cause that shit was catchy and my brother listened to it nonstop. I am pissed cause JCPenny is using it in commercials now. That got me to revisit the remix (done by the Propellerheads i think). Flipping it to a more booty/moody vibe with nonsense free bassline and scratched in vocals makes it a keeper. Simplicity...

Have you seen the video for the "It's In Our Hands"? Goddamn it is creepy...not as creepy as most of her others though. But you know this. I really did not like the Soft Pink Truth album, but this remix does indeed work. And yes, it was in the Hollertronix "Never Scared" mix. This track just seems very -tronixy. A fine addition to that mix, and a fine remix in it's own right.

That one natalie imbruglia track was everywhere that one summer. I was trapped at my grandma's house and watched a grip of MTV and mustve seen that thing 74 times an hour. With Portishead flipping a beat for you though, something good is pretty much bound to happen. This beat really reminds me of Ms Dynamite's track (uh...dy-na-mi-tee?...the one she once performed with chris martin). It is kinda overblown dramatic, but it could fit nicely into somewhere. There are some very much distinctly Portishead moments here though. PNYC mode.

Whoops, two Portishead tracks here. Goddamnit, Ben...start posting. I deal with too much Hip-Hop 9-5.

who is paul jones?

Is there a Mike Wall somewhere?

With Swishahouse being (deservedly) the shit on everyone's minds, I received a little gift in the form of a Bubba Sparxxx and Mudd Katz New South vinyl box set with doubles of 10 tracks (and the clipse boxset) from my friend and your friends, B-Side.

Timbaland succeeds in out-Neptuning Chad and Freal and almost out-metalcrunking Jon. The next cat who has a chance take over the rest of the country is Bump J (Bumpy Johnson) and his crew the Goon Squad. Bumpys signed to Atlantic Records and plans to drop an LP in the next year. He's got a smooth flow and the right connections with people like Kanye to really make moves. He put out a mixtape last year called Grimeyville, and has numerous tracks floating around. Wack. So dance music for rich white people? Maybe, but Kelis can make a lot of tracks dope. I like stupidly ghouly songs, and Help Me is kinda ghouly. Ghouly? Ghoulish! Sounds like an ethnic group. Alexkid with Lissette Alea is kinda pissed off sultry. Has kinda cool little rhythmic quirks. But still 4/4 danceshit.

Lately, I have really interested in the interplay of bands and how they actually do it. There are so many weird stops/pauses/rests whatever in "Only You" that wouldn't seem to impressive just MPCing it, but with the orchestra, live drums, etc playing along, it seems like could get tricky. Also cant be mad at random noodlings popping outta nowhere. 3rd favorite song from PNYC. Rhodes solo kills it.

By the way, Lambo is off just realizing that everyone love dipset (secretly or otherwise(Right? and Right?. really.)). These affiliates were known as The Wascals, and they recorded a full length for Delicious Vinyl that was scrapped for whatever reason. They released a few very dope singles but then dismantled after their album didn't drop. The tightest member of The Wascalz was an emcee by the name of Buc Whead. He stayed with Delicious vinyl and dropped a slew of singles for them but never released an album. He's still with Delicious Vinyl and is still releasing singles but the label doesn't seem to be close to releasing an album. I have to say his mid-nineties joints are a lot better then the songs hes putting out now so i decided to post a couple of em on here. He now goes by the name Buc Fifty when he rolls with Battle Axe, but I'm definitely not feeling that side of his career (New York Thuggish raps). So here are some jams from both The Wascalz (circa 1994) and Buc Whead (circa 1996). Enjoy.

The Wascalz-The Dips
Buc Whead-Smoker's Emporium
Buc Whead-Keep It Mackin'

subscribe, get yr issue

Mass Influence- All Out

Right...I really aint trying to be up here posting some tracks no one cares about, Darryl Jennifer is on TV talking about Hamburger Helper, but here i am.
There was a Mass Influence track on a Bumrush Brothers mixtape that achieved constant rotation status (the intro was my skratch blueprint for like, what til now?). Clown Syndrome was the track i think? I had a walkman that i customed with metallic tape and all kinds of craze. F my iPod, come to think of it. Enough.

All Out is one of those tracks perfect for "trick DJs" (what the hell that mean?) Whatever, but you can just hear J-Rocc flip it like nonelse. PB Wolf comforted me with his section cause i realized that even though dude has access to all the damn stones throw catalog, even he has trouble mixing some goddamn madlib productions well. How the hell you gonna mix rappcats when it starts with that madness? Goddamn!
These tracks is nuts though. Spectrum 77? I found this album a while back at a location I cannot disclose. Philly emcee Last Emperor's (of "Secret Wars" fame) lost, unreleased, scrapped, whatever you want to call it Interscope Records release from around 1998/1999. I must say I'm not quite sure why the good ole folks at interscope dropped the ball on this project. Last Emp's clever lyrics and smooth dimeanor, combined with executive producer Prince Paul (yeah I said it, the best producer ever), make this album a classic. No joke, this is one of the best albums I've ever heard from front to back and hopefully this ish will one day see be released. But for now here's some joints from this masterpiece.

The Drifter

Untitled

Gotta Have Love

trash dump

Since Daft Crunk got deaded so I can focus on this here team endeavor, here are almost all the tracks that appeared on my first attempt at MP3 blogging, with comments abbreviated to the point of uselessness.
Artist- Song (Album)

Diamonique-Boom Bap

inland empire hip-hop. she's hard.

Gang Of Four-Damaged Goods
